3 Things to Think About When Selecting Wood Floors

1. Subfloor
The type of subfloor in your home will play a lot into determining what material you can use. Hardwoods aren't the best option for concrete subfloors, but plywood subfloor will work with either hardwood or engineered flooring. For older homes that still have particleboard, it will need to be replaced before using either flooring type.

2. Location
Where you are putting the floors will also help you determine what to use. For high traffic areas like the kitchen and the entry way, you'll want to choose a hardwood like red oak because it's the most durable. The wood will most likely get scratched over time, especially with kids or pets, but it can be refinished over and over again. Engineered wood flooring won't scratch as easily but you won't be able to refinish it as many times.

3. Style
Though wood can be finished and stained in many different colors, the wood naturally lends itself to certain styles. The lighter color of maple makes it perfect for a very modern home, while oak and hickory are a bit more traditional. But that's not to say you can't mix styles! Be sure to think about the elements of the room as a whole and not just the floors by themselves. You'll want everything in the room to flow together.
